Gameplay ★★★★★★★★★☆ 9/10
World ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10
Age Resistance ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10

After picking up a bunch of discounted games through Steam, I started looking deeper into what I had actually purchased. Some of the bargains only made sense after filling in missing games from trilogies and connected series, so I decided to go back and experience them properly.

Rather than simply playing whatever was newest, I started working through them in order where possible.

This brings us to Dishonored.

Game Data

Title: Dishonored
Developer: Arkane Studios
Real-World Release: October 9, 2012
In-Universe Date: 1836 – 1837

The story begins with the assassination of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin and follows Corvo Attano’s journey to rescue Emily, expose the conspiracy, and overthrow the Lord Regent.

Copy: Steam
Hardware: ASUS TUF Gaming A15
Controller: PlayStation DualSense
Playtime: 24 Hours
Difficulty: Hard
Ending: Clean Hands

The Build:
Base Game + Basic Gameplay Mods Only

The Build

The goal of this build was not to completely change Dishonored.

This was not a full conversion or an extreme overhaul. The purpose was to keep the original game intact while fixing areas where the 2012 PC release showed its age.

The final result was a Vanilla+ experience:

Original gameplay preserved

No cheats

No artificial advantages

Controller support improved

Statistics made accessible

Small quality-of-life improvements added

The Modding

I started with the stealth approach because it seemed like the hardest way to experience the game.

Dishonored gives the player freedom, but playing without detection and without killing forces you to actually understand the systems rather than simply overpowering enemies.

After getting through the first prison escape section, I checked the mission statistics and discovered I had failed my own conditions. I had been spotted and had accidentally killed someone with the detonator.

After multiple attempts, I eventually completed it properly with full stealth. That was when I started modifying the experience.

The changes were not about making the game easier. They were about removing things that interrupted the experience and making the original game fit better on modern hardware.

Foundation

TFC Installer for UE2-UE3

The required foundation for loading Unreal Engine modifications.

TFC Installer for UE2-UE3

Controller Support

PlayStation Controller Icons

Dishonored was originally designed around Xbox controller prompts. Since this playthrough used a PlayStation DualSense controller, restoring PlayStation symbols was one of the first required fixes.

PlayStation Controller Icons

Mission Statistics

Mission Stats

One of the most useful additions.

Dishonored already records mission information, but this adds the statistics into the pause menu, making stealth and Clean Hands runs much easier to manage.

Mission Stats

Quality Of Life Fixes

Pre-main-menu-intro Disabler

A simple replacement that removes the unnecessary intro delay before reaching the main menu.

Pre-main-menu-intro Disabler

Skippable Cutscenes

Useful for replaying missions and testing different approaches without waiting through repeated scenes.

Skippable Cutscenes

Optional Enhancements

More Carriable Objects Mod for Dishonored

A small gameplay expansion that adds more interaction with the environment.

More Carriable Objects Mod for Dishonored

HD Texture Pack

A visual upgrade aimed at helping the game hold up better on modern displays.

HD Texture Pack

Tested But Removed

Dishonored Trainer

I tested the trainer menu, but the files conflicted with the statistics system.

Since the goal was improving the original experience rather than adding cheats, this was removed.

DishonoredTrainer

Gameplay Additions

These were considered useful depending on the type of playthrough.

Non-Lethal Playthrough

Instant Choke

Nonlethal Drop Takedown

Interesting Community Mods

Dishonored – Gizoogle Edition

The Playthrough

Dishonored remains one of those games where the systems are the real story.

The world gives you a goal, but it does not dictate how you achieve it. Every mission becomes a puzzle built around movement, observation, abilities, and choice.

The Clean Hands ending made the experience much more deliberate. Instead of simply eliminating problems, every encounter became something to solve.

The downside of playing this way is that the older parts of the game become more noticeable. Certain movement areas and environmental geometry occasionally felt rough, with Corvo getting caught against rocks or uneven surfaces at unfortunate moments.

When a single mistake can ruin a carefully planned stealth section, these small issues stand out more.

Gallery

Gameplay screenshots, mod comparisons, mission results, and build captures will be added here.

The Review

Gameplay: 9/10

Dishonored’s greatest strength is freedom.

The game gives you tools rather than solutions. Whether you choose stealth, exploration, manipulation, or direct action, the systems support your approach.

World: 8/10

Dunwall remains one of the strongest settings from its era. The combination of plague, industry, Victorian design, and supernatural elements creates a world that still feels unique.

The main weakness is age. Some environmental areas and movement sections show the limitations of the original release.

Age Resistance: 8/10

Despite being released in 2012, Dishonored still holds up extremely well.

The art direction helps, but the real reason it survives is the gameplay systems. The experience still feels fresh because the player creates their own solutions.

Would I Replay?

Yes, but not immediately.

After completing a careful stealth run, I am interested in seeing the other side of the game: high chaos, aggressive abilities, and the consequences of a completely different approach.

With multiple DLCs and sequels still waiting, Dishonored is not finished.

The game can easily be returned to because the second playthrough is not simply repeating the first. It becomes a different version of the same experience.

Final Thoughts

The game did not need replacing. It needed preservation.

The modifications used here were not about changing what Dishonored was. They were about allowing the original idea to survive on modern hardware.

A clean, modern Vanilla+ version of a classic immersive sim.

Final Build: Approved.
